As part of the Focus Programme, SGIFF seeks to contextualise the films in this year’s Festival lineup. This panel discussion will explore film and visual storytelling in Southeast Asia: What kinds of stories do we tell? Are there unique themes and metaphors that underpin those stories? How does film form influence the art of storytelling? And what is in store for those stories? To initiate these discussions, we have assembled a panel of filmmakers whose films are screening in the Asian Feature Competition and Focus sections of the Festival. Spanning styles and genres, with some experimenting with film narrative, this panel discussion will offer insights into their work and the breadth of storytelling. Guo Xiao-Dong, Sun Koh, Raya Martin, Yosep Anggi Noen
Guo Xiao-Dong is a film producer, editor and curator. He edited Free and Easy and Knife in the Clear Water. He is the producer of The Tree House and founder of New Asian Filmmakers Collective.
Sun Koh is a film and TV producer, writer, director and editor. Since her debut short film, The Secret Heaven (2002), she has made six short films, three independent omnibus features, and six TV movies. She is the executive producer for Lucky7 (2008).
Raya Martin’s works engage deeply with the weight of history, consciousness and postcolonial realities as evident in A Short Film About the Indio Nacional (2005). His retrospectives have been screened at the Museum of the Moving Image and Centre Pompidou.
Yosep Anggi Noen is an Indonesian director, screenwriter and producer whose previous works include Peculiar Vacation and Other Illnesses (2012) and Solo, Solitude (2016). His latest directorial work The Science of Fictions is in competition at this year’s Singapore International Film Festival.
